Thoughts about Graded China Proof Ordinary Commemorative Coins - SUN Keqin
In 2011 Beijing International Stamp and Coin Exposition, I visited the booth of Guangzhou National Standard Numismatic Collection Grading Co. Ltd, gained some understanding about graded coin. After that, I started to send the Chinese proof coin for grading tentatively. At a later time, I also sent the specimen. By reading the grading result, I found the coin grading companies have very little knowledge about the modern coins of China.
The NGC graded the Chinese coins referred to the Standard Catalog of World Coin, which does not include the specimen of China coin, but some proof coins, like, Xinjiang, Tibet (1985). The grading results are normally different from what we thought before sending.
Take pattern coin as example, the NGC graded at “MS” in the beginning. After I negotiated with them through Guangzhou International, they agreed to change a box, and re-graded the coin as “SP”. For proof pattern coin, sometime they graded as SP and sometime as “PF”.??I told them should rate by PF, PATTERN. The good thing with NGC is, if they really do not understand, they will pretty much like to learn. If they find a mistake, they will fix it, and if still cannot get it right, they will keep changing, until the issue resolved.??
For proof coin, we found the results are about right, as long as the coin is made by either copper-nickel alloy or nickel coated steel. Such as the 35 Anniversary, Tibet(1985), Xinjiang, Year of Peace, Centre Bank 40 Anniversary, Asian Game, Anti Japanese War, World Women Conference, and the Project Hope, issued in early stage (1984 ~ 1995), and Zhude, Deng Xiaoping, Chenyun, CNPC, issued in later stage (after 1996), all graded as PF, except PL for Asian Game. The grades of red copper animal proof coins are all rated MS, none was PF. We found only 2 brass alloy coins were graded as PF, the rest were all MS, such as new Tibet (2001), the Revolution of 1911, the World Culture Treasure, Taiwan series, Chinese New Year series. For the dual-metal coins, the New Century was PF, but National 50 anniversary was MS.
I consulted Guangzhou National Standard Numismatic Collection Grading Co. Ltd and told them wrong. They explained that the expert of NGC did not think those red copper and brass alloy proof coins met the standard of proof, So far, Guangzhou International is approaching NGC and waiting for response, if NGC thought they made it wrong, they will change the box. Since the proof coins of later stage (after 1995) are cheap, does not matter they change the box or not, the actual status of coins will not change anyway.??The wrongly graded coins will be the witness the development of graded Chinese proof coins.
The discussion above related only to the issues of NGC grading the Chinese coin. For PCGS, the communication is even more difficult. So, PCGS’s grading quality of Chinese coin is even worse. Say, PCGS graded the copper-nickel ally as MS, say, the Year of Peace, Xinjiang.
I have been thinking, since NGC has been constantly making the mistake, changing box and label, which not only bothered themselves quite a bit, but also cost lots of unnecessary shipping expense for Guangzhou International, yet, made Chinese collectors to wait for a much long time. Would rather cost unnecessary money, why do not I give NGC specialist some lectures, helping them to learn and understand more about Chinese modern coins. However, the student can only be a good one if he wants to learn. I do not understand whether the American expert does not want to learn, or Guangzhou International does not want to be the bridge? Or we should not rely on??American for Chinese coin grading? Guangzhou National Standard Numismatic Collection Grading Co. Ltd
The grading of Chinese coin has not been well addressed for a long time. Why is that?
